BELGRADE, Nov. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- The Kosovo parliament, under pressure from the international community, decided on Thursday not to adopt the announced resolution proclaiming independence, said reports reaching here from Pristina.

    The Kosovo parliament adopted a document instead of a resolution, confirming the political will of the Kosovo people to live in an independent and sovereign state of Kosovo, reported the official Tanjug news agency.

    The document was adopted with 104 of the 120 MPs in favor, andenvisages the holding of a referendum on the issue, said the reports.

    The United Nations Kosovo mission chief Soren Jessen-Petersen and the United States' Pristina Office chief Philip Goldberg have warned the provincial parliament MPs not to adopt the resolution on independence, which violates UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and the principles of the Contact Group on Kosovo.

    UN mission spokesman Neeraj Singh said on Wednesday that the resolution compromises the position of Kosovo ahead of UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari's visit next week.

    The reports said that the document will constitute a legal and political platform of Pristina's negotiating team in the forthcoming talks on the future status of the province, which has been under UN administration since June 1999.

    Under the document, the Kosovo parliament guarantees territorial integrity of Kosovo and inviolability of its borders. Enditem
