www.chinaview.cn 2005-11-14 13:41:43

LONDON, Nov. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- British royal members and veterans on Sunday paid tribute in central London to those who gave their lives in war.

Some 10,000 veterans and civilians turned out to honor those fallen for the country at the annual Remembrance Sunday service.

The Queen Elizabeth II was the first to place a wreath of poppies at the base of the Cenotaph. Prince Harry took part in thecommemorations at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, where he is training to be an officer.

Prime Minister Tony Blair also laid a wreath of red poppies at the Cenotaph.

The commemoration took place after the country marked the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

More than 900,000 soldiers were killed between 1914 and 1918 during the first World War and 388,000 died in World War Two.

In the Falklands War there were 252 service deaths and in the most recent conflict in Iraq, a total of 97 British soldiers have so far lost their lives. Enditem กก
