Poland denies presence of secret foreign prisons

WARSAW, Nov. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Poland has never allowed any foreign country to set up secret prisons on its territory for holding foreign terrorists, the Polish government said on Thursday.

"The Polish government categorically denies the allegations that have appeared in the media about the existence on the territory of the Republic of Poland of secret prisons which could house foreigners suspected of terrorism," said Polish government spokesman Konrad Ciesiolkiwicz in a statement.

There are no such prisons in Poland and no prisoners are held in violation of international law and conventions to which Poland is a party, said the statement.

Last week, the Washington Post said the the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was running a network of secret facilities for captured terror suspects in eight countries, outside the reach of the US judicial system.

The rights group Human Rights Watch said it believed Poland and Romania had cooperated with the CIA, based on flight records and other evidence.

Romania has also denied housing any of the alleged prisons. Enditem
