BRUSSELS, Nov. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Unrest was witnessed in various Belgian cities for the third successive night on Tuesday while the federal government dismissed fears that rioting in France might spill over the border.
On Tuesday night, unrest was seen in Brussels, western city of Ghent and northern city of Antwerp, and two suspected arsonists were arrested, Belgian media reported Wednesday.
The federal government, however, insisted that each case was anisolated incident and that there were no large gatherings of youths. There were no clashes with police, a spokesman of the federal government's crisis center was quoted as saying.
In Brussels, up to 15 vehicles and two cellars are reported to have been burnt.
Most of the incidents occurred in the Anderlecht district wherethere are a large immigrant population.
Two car fires were reported within minutes of each other in Ghent, a city northwest of Brussels. But police said only one is being treated as an arson attack.
"It is an exceptional coincidence that the burning of both carshappened directly after each other, but they are not connected," Mayor Frank Beke was quoted by Het Nieuwsblad newspaper as saying.
Ghent police commissioner Steven de Smet is taking the arson attack very seriously and said police will conduct a very thoroughinvestigation, said the paper. "But we must not panic either. For now, we cannot say there are indications of systemic violence."
Two male youths were arrested in the northern city of Antwerp for an arson attack. The suspects are Belgian citizens of immigrant background aged 17 and 19.
The suspects were admitted with burns injuries to a hospital shortly after the blaze. It is suspected that they were injured bytheir own fire bomb.
Also in Antwerp, a truck fire was reported at a supermarket carpark at about 10:30 p.m. (2130 GMT). The flame then spread to a bus. A witness saw three people running away from the blaze. Enditem |
