PARIS, Nov. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy announced Tuesday that the French government authorized power to local government officials to impose curfews in some areas to try to restore order and stop unrest raging for 12 days.
ĦĦĦĦThe French cabinet approved a decree so that local government officials, or prefects, could impose curfews where they consider the measures necessary, and the measures are expected to go into force on Wednesday, Sarkozy said.
The decree came after the worst violence from Sunday to Monday when 1,408 cars were torched in nearly 300 towns.
The tensions a little decreased overnight Monday with 1,173 vehicles burned in 226 towns, and 330 people arrested, compared with 395 on the previous night, according to National Police Chief Michel Gaudin.
More than 10 countries have warned their citizens of vigilance in their trips to France, although France's tourism minister, Leon Bertrand,insisted the country remained safe for tourists.
The violence began in Clichy-sous-bois, northeast of Paris, on Oct. 27 when two teenagers were accidentally electrocuted as the hid in an electrical sub-station to avoid a police identity check.Enditem |
