BRUSSELS, Nov. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- The European Union (EU) was "disappointed" with the Azerbaijani parliamentary election for it did not meet international standards despite some improvements, a senior EU official said here on Monday.

The EU sent this signal on Monday after the EU foreign ministers, who gathered here for a two-day meeting, discussed the election over their lunch.

"The OSCE (the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) said the election did not meet the international standards, this is disappointing," said Benita Ferrero-Waldner at a press conference at the interval of the EU foreign ministers' meeting.

She said there were rooms for improvements in the election process like counting of ballots and pre-election campaigning.

However, the commissioner noted that there was still "positive signal" at the election.

"The election was held in a peaceful manner," she said.

Ms. Waldner said the EU hopes that the disputes over the election results should be resolved through "normal legal measures."

According to the latest official results based on almost 96 percent of ballots counted, the ruling New Azerbaijan Party won anoutright majority, with control of 63 seats in the 125-seat national assembly.

Earlier on Monday, OSCE, who sent on-the-spot observers to monitor Sunday's election, announced that the election "did not meet a number of OSCE commitments and Council of Europe standards for democratic elections." Enditem
