SANTIAGO, Nov. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Fugitive former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori arrived unexpectedly in Chile on Sunday amid tense atmosphere between Chile and Peru, said the Chilean government sources.

Fujimori arrived in the Chile capital of Santiago on a private plane at around 3 p.m. (1800 GMT) and stayed at the luxurious Marriott hotel.

Fujimori arrived in Chile after Peru's parliament passed a law last week to extend its sea borders into an area which Chile currently claims.

The government sources said Fujimori's arrival made Chilean government anxious since the dispute over sea boundaries had already created tensions between the two countries.

Fujimori, who ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000, fled to Japan in November 2000, when a corruption scandal toppled his government.

Peruvian authorities have twice tried to extradite him on 21 separate charges, including authorizing death squads and abuse of power.

The former president said repeatedly he would participate in Peru's coming presidential election in 2006. Enditem
