Americans more skeptical of Bush: poll

WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Over half of the Americans doubted the honesty of US President George W. Bush while only 40 percent see him as trustworthy, according to a latest survey.

The figures, released by an ABC News/Washington Post poll Friday, suggested the indictment of former presidential assistant and vice presidential chief of staff I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby over the CIA case is hurting the president's credibility, pollsters said.

The survey also found Bush's job approval rating hit a new low of 39 percent, compared with the 51 percent of approval votes in the poll one year ago.

On Thursday, a CBS News poll put Bush's job approval rating to only 35 percent, the lowest level since he took office in 2001 and one of the worst for any president.

Analysts said these numbers conveyed more worrying messages to the White House at a time when it is trying to re-boost the image of Bush, who had once forged a solid bond with Americans after the Sept. 11 terror attacks in 2001.

Meanwhile, they said that for issues like the probe into the case of leaking the identity of a covert CIA agent, or the quickly mounting US deaths in Iraq, there is nothing the Bush administration can do to win back public confidence. Enditem
