MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina, Nov. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- The Argentine police Thursday raided a house, seizing firearms and capturing a suspect, on the outskirts of the seaside resort Mar del Plata, 400km south of Buenos Aires.
The authorities said Thursday that the police operation was carried out on Wednesday in parallel with the security measures being taken in Mar del Plata, the venue for the 4th Summit of the Americas, which is to be held on Nov. 4-5.
The seized firearms included shotguns, submachine guns, pistols and 3,500 bullets.
The detainee, Ariel Cespedes, is a gunrunner who supplies criminals along the Argentine Atlantic littoral, said the authorities.
Those arms did not belong to groups who attempted to sabotage the summit, according to the officials.
The police said they made a two-month investigation in the zone before finally catching Cespedes.
In order to prevent a terrorist attack in Mar del Plata, the authorities deployed 9,000 agents to guard the summit's site, limited access to the city's downtown and closed the air and sea space over and around the venue. Enditem |
