Blair rules out military action against Iran
www.chinaview.cn 2005-11-03 05:00:30

LONDON, Nov. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Wednesday that military action against Iran is not on the agenda, but the international community will not tolerate the country's defiance against its obligations.

"Nobody is talking about military threats or invasion of Iran or any of the rest of it," Blair said in the House of Commons during his Question Time session.

"What we are however saying is that the Iranian government has got to understand that the international community simply will notput up with their continued breach of the proper and normal standards of behavior that we expected from a member of the UnitedNations," Blair said.

"And I did want to make it clear, and I do make it clear again now, the statements by the Iranian president in respect of Israel are completely and totally unacceptable," he said, adding "this issomething we want to discuss with other allies and with other members of the Security Council."

Last Thursday, Blair, whose country holds the current EU presidency, joined other EU leaders in Surrey, South of London, for a one-day informal meeting.

They issued a statement, condemning "in the strongest terms" the comments of violence by Iranian president against the State ofIsrael.

The remarks "are manifestly inconsistent with any claim to be amature and responsible member of the international community," said the statement.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for Israel to be "wiped off the map" at a conference in Tehran entitled The World without Zionism while Israel's Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres called for Iran to be expelled from the United Nations.

Such comments will cause concern about Iran's role in the region, and its future intentions, said the statement, adding "the fact that these comments were made on the same day as a horrific attack on Israeli civilians should reinforce the lesson that incitement to violence, and the terrorism that it breeds, are despicable and unacceptable acts."
