Afghan, US troops find cache in southern Afghanistan

KABUL, Nov. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and Coalition troops discovered a cache in Afghan southern province of Ghazni on Tuesday, US military said Wednesday.

"The cache consisted of weapons, ammunition, mines and documents. This find is significant because the removal of this cache denies the enemy the capability to attack the Government of Afghanistan and kill innocent Afghan civilians," US military said.

"The cache held a heavy machine gun, light machine guns, assault rifles, recoilless rifles, mortar systems with mortar rounds, thousands of rounds of small-arms and light-machine gun ammunition, 135 rocket-propelled grenades, two crates of fragmentation grenades and IED making materials," it added.

The items were secured by the unit and taken to a nearby Forward Operating Base where they were destroyed.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, other two caches were turned in to Coalition forces by the ANP (Afghan National Police) in the eastern Nangarhar and Kunar provinces on Nov. 1 and Oct. 31.

The two caches consisted of approximately 85 rockets or rocket components, 18 mortar rounds, small-arms ammunition and artillery rounds.

The cache discovered on Oct. 31 was destroyed in place by an explosive ordinance disposal team, and the other cache will be destroyed at a later date. Enditem
