Tropical storm Beta nears Colombian island
www.chinaview.cn 2005-10-29 16:00:18

BEIJING, Oct. 29 -- In Colombia, Tropical Storm Beta has veered east of the island of San Andres. But it still poses a threat to the smaller Colombian island of Providencia, a mountainous area north of San Andres. And the storm is expected to strengthen and hit Nicaragua as a strong Category 2 hurricane by Sunday.

The storm appeared on track to become the 13th hurricane of the already record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season. Beta's winds strengthened to 65 miles per hour early on Friday, when the storm was located 35 miles southeast of San Andres.

To prepare for the storm, about 500 tourists and 200 people living in shacks near the southern beaches of San Andres were moved to a dozen shelters set up by the government.
