SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic
of Korea (DPRK) on Friday concluded one-day economic talks in Kaesong, DPRK's
border town near South Korea, agreeing to continue discussions of mutual concern
in future.
"We decided to continue to discuss ways to have pending issues such as
Seoul's provision of raw materials, development of the North (DPRK)'s
underground resources and reconnection of inter-Korean railways and roadways
bear fruit as early as possible to meet the common interests of the Korean
nation," said a joint statement issued at the end of the 11th Inter-Korean
Economic Cooperation Promotion Committee Meeting.
The joint tatement also specified fisheries cooperation and thedevelopment
of Kaesong Industrial Complex as other key agenda items, reported South Korean
Yonhap News Agency.
Kaesong is the location for a joint industrial complex where South Korean
manufacturing companies are utilizing DPRK's cheap labor force.
Earlier Friday, the two sides opened their first joint business office in
Kaesong.
"On the occasion of opening the economic cooperation office, we agreed to
quickly respond to problems arising at the civil and government level from
future economic cooperation and to more broadly and aggressively expand the
scope of cooperation in a new format and manner," the joint statement said.
The two sides will set the date and venue of the next round of talks in
weekly meetings to be held at the Kaesong office, it said.
The South Korean delegation led by Vice Economy and Finance Minister Bahk
Byong-won, returned home immediately after the conclusion of the talks in
Friday.
The DPRK was represented by Choe Yong Gon, deputy minister for construction and building material industries, and five other delegates. Enditem |
