RAMALLAH, Oct. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei on Wednesday called for reforms in the security apparatuses in a bid to stem out rampant chaos in the Palestinian territories.
Qurei made the appeal at a session of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in the West Bank city of Ramallah, during which lawmakers debated on a no-confidence motion against his cabinet.
"Two major measures should be adopted in order to end the deterioration of security," he said.
"The first is to give the Palestinian security apparatuses a legal umbrella and the second is to merge the security apparatuses technically and practically," he added.
"Without these reforms, I don't think anyone is able to control the security situation," he concluded.
Qurei's cabinet is accused by the parliament of failing to stamp out widespread chaos.
The PLC has urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to dissolve Qurei's cabinet and form a new one or face the no-confidence vote.
Addressing the parliament on Wednesday, Abbas recommended that Qurei's cabinet remain intact until the Jan. 25 parliamentary elections.
Abbas said there will be no time for forming a new cabinet before the legislative ballot, but added that when registration for the elections begins in November, some cabinet members, intending to run in the race, will quit the government and be replaced.
According to the Palestinian law, anyone in bid for the legislature as well as lawmakers should not take government posts at the same time.
Abbas has started revamping the Palestinian security apparatuses since being elected president in January. But the reforms, facing stiff internal resistance, are halting. Enditem |
