Convicted Bali bombers await execution
www.chinaview.cn 2005-10-24 21:28:28

JAKARTA, Oct. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Indonesian authorities have transferred three militants convicted of the October 2002 Bali bombings from Bali to a prison island in Central Java, but a warden said Monday the three inmates in death row will be executed in Bali.

The Indonesia law says that the execution of the condemned inmates must be carried out in the town where they committed the crimes, said Sudijanto, a warden with the state jail on Nusa Kambangan island.

He said only the Attorney General's Office has the authority to order the execution, which is carried out by a firing squad.

The inmates -- Imam Samudra, Amrozi and Ali Ghufron -- have recently rejected a court offer to ask for a presidential pardon, meaning that they accept their sentences.

The three were convicted for leadership role in the nightclub bombings in Bali that killed 202 people three years ago.

They were moved to Nusa Kambangan for security reason, as many Balinese angered by the latest bombing on Oct. 1 had stormed the Kerobokan prison on the resort island demanding the execution.

Sudijanto said his prison is entrusted to keep the inmates until their execution day, which has not been specified yet.

"We put them under maximum security," he was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.

He said prison guards restricted talks with the three militants, who are isolated in a separate cell with six additional guards from the police.

"We never talk with them because it is useless. They have different minds from ours," the warden said. Enditem
