MEXICO CITY, Oct. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- At least 23 prisoners escaped from a high-security prison through a tunnel early Saturday, according to reports from Guatemala's capital of Guatemala City.

The jailbreak took place in a prison 80 km south of Guatemala City, where the inmates dug a 120-meter-long tunnel and fled.

The escapees include felons convicted of kidnapping, murder andrape, said Guatemalan Interior Minister Carlos Vielman Montes.

Authorities have offered a 50,000 quetzal (6,500 US dollars) bounty for information leading to the capture of the prisoners who escaped.

The incident came after prison riots killed 36 people and wounded more than 60 others in August. Enditem
