Guangdong wins team relay title in modern pentathlon

    SUZHOU, East China, Oct. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Guangdong took the men's team relay of the modern pentathlon tournament here Saturday at the 10th Chinese National Games.

    Shanghai and Hubei finished second and third respectively.

    Boasting three top pentathletes, namely Liu Yang, Liu Yanli andChen Zhaowei, Guangdong set up an initial lead by winning the shooting leg with 270 target points and achieving 54 victories against only nine defeats in the fencing, keeping the superiority of 276 points over Shanghai.

    While Shanghai, consisting of men's individual champion Qian Zhenhua, runner-up Cao Zhongrong and youngster Huang Wenliang, failed to close the gap in the swimming and riding competitions.

    Then Guangdong started the final run 48 seconds clear of the field to secure the team relay title with no trouble.

    In the previous contests, Xiu Xiu from Henan won the women's individual while men's individual title went to Qian Zhenhua of Shanghai, who claimed the title at the Chinese National Games three times consecutively. Enditem
