TOKYO, Oct. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- A fairly strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the
Richter scale hit Tokyo and surrounding area Wednesday evening.
The quake, which occurred at around 8:44 p.m. (1144 GMT), was also measured
a maximum intensity of lower 5 on the seven-level Japanese seismic scale,
according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency.
The quake's focus was about 40 kilometers below sea off Ibaraki prefecture
north of Tokyo, the agency said.
The agency said there is no fear for a tsunami.
There has been no immediate report about casualty.
An experimental nuclear reactor run by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency in
Ibaraki prefecture halted its operation automatically after the quake, according
to Kyodo News.
Narita airport near Tokyo briefly shut its runways following the quake. The quake also suspended trains in some regions. Enditem |
