NEW DELHI, Oct. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Four "moderate" tremors shook
Indian-controlled Kashmir valley Tuesday, leading to panic-stricken locals
making anxious inquiries about the welfare of their relatives and friends.
The aftershocks, 11 days after a massive 7.6 quake shook the area, started at
12:02 a.m. with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale.
"The epicenter of that 'moderate' shock was near the Line of Control (LoC)
between India and Pakistan in Kashmir. Its location was 35.0 degrees North and
73.0 East," Indo-Asian News Service quoted a meteorological department official
as saying.
The second aftershock came at 2:50 a.m. also with a magnitude of 5.2 and
centered on the LoC, at 35.2 degrees North and 75.3 degrees East.
The third shock, measuring 5.3, was felt at 8:03 a.m. in the same area.
The fourth tremor was felt around 9 a.m., but technical details of its
epicenter are yet to be established.
Though seismologists are describing these aftershocks as "moderate", the
psychological impact on the minds of an already shattered populace is immense.
So far, there has been no report of any damage to life and property from
anywhere in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
The "10.8" quake killed at least 1,400 people in India, and at least 40,000 on the other side of the LoC. Enditem |
