 Selma Blair in Columbia Pictures' The Fog - 2005 | BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Sony Corp.'s horror film "The Fog", a remake of a 1980 horror classic, topped the North American box office at the weekend, grossing $12.2 million, barely overcasting last week's winner.
Clay-animation adventure Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, dropped to second place with $11.7 million, and the new Cameron Crowe road-trip movie, Elizabethtown, stalled in third place with just $11 million.
In "The Fog," a seaside town is shrouded in a thick fog a century after a ship carrying lepers sank just off the coast under mysterious circumstances. Ghosts of the dead return for revenge. The movie stars Tom Welling, Maggie Grace and Selma Blair.

While $12.2 million is hardly a blockbuster opening for a major studio release, Columbia executives said they were cheered by the film's first-week performance in light of its modest budget.
"It cost in the neighborhood of around $18 million to make, so it will be very successful for us," said Rory Bruer, president of distribution for Columbia, a unit of Sony Corp. Enditem
