CAIRO, Oct. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Despite security concerns, Arab League
(AL)Secretary General Amr Moussa said Sunday that he would carry out a scheduled
visit to Iraq, and push forward an initiative on Iraqi national reconciliation.
"It is the first time an Arab political representative talks about an
initiative in the name of all Arabs, and I will do my best to render it a
success," Moussa told reporters.
Moussa said the initiative was very important to help the Iraqis to rebuild
their country, but he didn't offer any details of the initiative.
Earlier reports said Moussa would wrap up details of an Iraqi national
reconciliation conference, which is to be held at an unspecified date after
Saturday's landmark constitutional referendum.
The security was still tight in Iraq. An AL delegation preparing for
Moussa's visit came under attack in Baghdad on Oct. 10 while driving to a
meeting with an influential association of Sunni Muslim clerics. Two policemen
escorting the delegation were killed.
Although the results of Saturday's vote are still unknown, Moussa said the
referendum was "a step in the right direction."
Part of the Sunni Muslims, a minority in Iraq, are dissatisfiedwith the
draft constitution and eager for a veto.
During the upcoming trip, Moussa mainly aims to bridge gaps between Iraq's
Shiites and Sunni Arabs. Shiite Arabs are the majority in Iraq.
An Arab League official said Sunday the pan-Arab organization was still in
contact with the Iraqi side on the schedule of Moussa's visit.
Some reports said Moussa would leave for Iraq on a three-day visit on
Monday. It will be his first visit to the war-shattered country since the ouster
of Saddam Hussein. Enditem |
