BAGHDAD, Oct. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Gunmen attacked a closed polling station in Abu Ghraib area west of Baghdad and stole five ballot boxes shortly after the constitutional referendum came to an end, an Interior Ministry source said.
"Twelve militants burst into one polling station which was closed by the independent electoral commission staff in al-Zaidan village in Abu Ghraib area, wounding one of the workers and stealing five ballot boxes," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Polling stations closed at 5:00 p.m. (1400 GMT) Saturday after Iraqis cast votes in a national referendum on the draft constitution.
Over 6,000 voting centers opened across Iraq at 7 a.m. (04:00GMT) on Saturday. Some 15.5 million Iraqis, out of the 26 million population, were eligible to vote.
Under Iraq's interim constitution, if the charter is approved in Saturday's referendum, parliamentary elections will be held on Dec. 15. Enditem |
