ISLAMABAD, Oct. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- The official death toll from the powerful earthquake in Pakistan last Saturday jumped to 38,000 so far, according to military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan.

"The death toll from the earthquake is now 38,000 and 62,000 people are injured,'' Sultan told the private Geo television. The previously death toll confirmed officially from the quake was 25,000.

He said that relief work was continuing around the clock.

"We are trying to open blocked roads, and troops are reaching to far-flung areas in Kashmir and other parts of Pakistan,'' he said, adding the relief operation was in full swing.

In India, the Oct. 8 quake also killed some 1,400 people. Enditem
