BUCHAREST, Oct. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The Romanian government confirmed on Friday that another place in the Danube delta area was affected by bird flu and has taken measures to prevent the spread of the disease, the Romanian news agency Rompres said.
The news agency said that 120 chickens died in Maliuc in the Danube delta area in east Romania on Friday, and health officials detected bird flu virus in a chicken and a dead swan.
The government has ordered to isolate the area and deployed army and police forces to kill all the poultry within three km of Maliuc.
On Friday, Romanian President Traian Basescu said that tens of thousands of migratory birds, which may carry the virus, are expected to arrive in the delta area before December. And the government is preparing to take measures to prevent the further spread of the disease.
On the same day, Victor Olsavszky, representative of the World Health Organization to Romania, said that humans can be infected with the bird flu virus only when they are exposed to it for a long time and for many times.
The official said that by now, there has been no report of any human-to-human spread of bird flu.
Since bird flu was detected in Ceamurliu De Jos in east Romaniaon Oct. 7, the authorities in the region have begun to disinfect and quarantine poultry farms in the area. Vehicles and personnel in the region were also required to be disinfected.
The Health Ministry also dispatched medical personnel to vaccinate local people.
Meanwhile, farmers in the region were told to keep their chickens away from wild birds. Enditem |
