Ukrainian president sacks prosecutor general

KIEV, Oct. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenkofired Prosecutor General Sviatoslav Piskun on Friday.

Oleh Rybachuk, head of the presidential secretariat, told reporters the dismissal conformed to Ukrainian laws. Piskun was also entitled to appeal for a court ruling on the decree, he added.

Yushchenko has given no explanation or statement about the sacking. Rybachuk said at the press conference that the president had sufficient reasons to make the decision, and that he will give an explanation to the public in person.

Piskun had served an earlier term at the position but was dismissed by former President Leonid Kuchma in 2003. He was criticized for being busy with improving personal image, acting against regulations and causing damage to national reputation.

Piskun regained the job last October by virtue of a court ruling in Kiev. Enditem
