BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Several central government departments began a special joint nationwide campaign late in September to crack down on porn activities in Internet-based video chat rooms. 

    Beginning on Sept. 28, the Information Office of the State Council, the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Information Industry jointly carried out the move which has reportedly reaped fruits.

    According to the Ministry of Public Security, police have seized 1,568 clues and 101 suspects since last August, with 74 held in custody on criminal bases.

    At the same time, 95 individuals and 7 units were fined and warnings were given to dozens of others accordingly.

    Some persons spread porn information or organized porn performance in Internet video chatrooms for proceeds, said the ministry, citing the acts as having seriously contaminated the Internet environment and aroused a great number of complaints fromthe public.

    In order to promote the move into further depth, the ministry has set a special website for people to report Internet porn activities: www.cyberpolice.cn. Whistleblowers can also visit net.China.cn to report illegal or base information.

100 arrested for porn information in Internet

    One hundred and one criminal suspects have been arrested since Chinese police started to crack down on what it deems to be obscene Internet activity this August, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

    The ministry said the Internet has been exploited by illegal chat rooms that recruit for sex movies.

    "This behavior has severely polluted the Internet environment, done harm to juvenile's physical and mental health and caused strong public anger," it said.
