HK to strengthen ties with mainland

HONG KONG, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- With more exchanges between HongKong and the mainland, the Hong Kong Special Adiministrative Region (HKSAR) government must engage in more dialogue with the central authorities and other mainland authorities at all levels, Chief Executive Donald Tsang said Wednesday.

Delivering a policy address at the Legislative Council, Tsang said exchanges between Hong Kong and the central authorities have intensified in recent years and both sides have reaped substantial benefits.

He hoped all principal officials and permanent secretaries will visit Beijing and other places on the mainland more frequently to enhance communication and mutual understanding and to engage in discussions on substantive issues.

In addition to the existing office of the HKSAR government in Beijing and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Guangdong, the SAR government will discuss with the central authorities setting up additional offices in Shanghai and Chengdu with a view to promoting exchanges and cooperation with eastern China and the southwestern region, Tsang said.

He has decided to expand the powers and functions of the Constitutional Affairs Bureau by establishing a Mainland Affairs Liaison Office within it in order to better cooperation with Guangdong, the Pan-Pearl River Delta (Pan-PRD) and many other areas in the mainland. Enditem
