Death toll rises to 927 in quake-hit Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Death toll has risen to 927 as of Monday midnight in India-controlled Kashmir, where a powerful earthquake caused severe loss Saturday.

About 3,000 people were injured and 4,597 houses were pulled down to rubbles, said the local officials Tuesday.

Half a dozen of villages in worst-hit Baramulla, which reported 619 deaths, remain inaccessible though the army and air force have started rescue operation for three days.

There are angers and protests at a few villages as local residents are still lacking of food and tents.

In a small village Udoosa along the highway between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, six children died of cold after spending two nights in the open. Relief work has hardly reached there.

People showed great anger at local administrations as few relief teams of the government have been seen in the fields. Relief and rescue work highly depend on the army. Enditem
