KABUL, Oct. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- A powerful explosion, apparently suicide attack rocked Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province Monday morning, leaving six dead and five others injured, said thepolice.

"The blast, apparently suicide attack took place in front of Agha Shah, a pro-government former commander at around 10 o'clock, leaving six dead including Shah and injuring five others," senior police official Abdul Hakim Khan told Xinhua.

This is the second attack of its kind in the volatile province which is the former stronghold of Taliban militants over the past two days. The first explosion, which targeted a car Sunday, killedthe suicide attacker and injured four Britons in the city.

The number of casualties is feared to rise as rescue operation is going on.

The enemies of peace and security, a term used to against militants, were behind the bloody incident, said Hakim Khan.

Remnants of the former fundamentalist regime, who failed to disrupt the landmark September 18 Afghan parliamentary polls, have intensified their activities over the past couple of weeks.

More than 1,200 people including militants, Afghan and US troops as well as pro-government figures have been killed in Taliban-linked insurgency since the beginning of this year. Enditem
