Israel opens main crossing on Gaza-Israeli border

GAZA, Oct. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Israel opened the Karni Crossing on the border between eastern Gaza and Israel on Sunday after a 14-day shutdown, Palestinian security sources said.

The sources said Israel decided to open the crossing in both directions, adding that Palestinian lorries were seen entering the Gaza Strip with construction materials.

The Karni Crossing had remained closed down for two consecutive weeks, which dealt a hard blow to the Gaza Strip, which is in shortage of daily necessities.

The sources said three other crossings in Gaza, the Rafah crossing on the Gaza-Egypt border, the Erez Crossing on northern Gaza border and the Sofa Crossing on southern Gaza border, still remained shut.

An uproar erupted on the Gaza-Egypt border following the Israeli withdrawal from the coastal strip last month.

Thousands of Palestinians poured into Egypt to visit relatives and stock on cheap supplies, causing concerns to Israel, which stepped up border control. Enditem
