Quake claims 320 lives in Indian-controlled Kashmir

    Srinagar, Oct. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- The death toll in the earthquake hit Indian-Controlled Kashmir mounted to 320 Sunday, even as India's defense minister Pranab Mukherjee and ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi arrived here to take stock of the situation.

    The death toll across the region has reached 320 so far, a government official said Sunday.

    Nine hundred people are still admitted in various hospitals and nursing homes across the region for treatment.

    Kupwara district and Baramulla, alone accounted for some 296 deaths. Srinagar, the summer capital of the Indian-controlled Kashmir also registered six deaths due to the Saturday devastating earthquake, the official said.

    The official also said that 18 deaths were recorded in Jammu region from areas falling close to the Line of Control.

    In addition to this, there were 2000 houses which faced the brunt of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in the Indian-controlled Kashmir.

    According to the state chief secretary Vijaya Bakaya, as rescuers searched through the rubble looking for survivors, authorities pitched hundreds of tents and began providing food to the victims in the flattened regions. Enditem
