Annan calls for united, peaceful Iraq

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan welcome on Wednesday the decision of the Iraqi parliament to reverse itself, and called on parties in Iraq to work together to build a united and peaceful nation.

"I think it is very important that the Iraqi Parliament reversed itself, because that decision was patently inappropriate and we made that clear to them," Annan told reporters at UN headquarters.

"We continue to hope that the Iraqis will find a process of reconciling and maintaining a united and peaceful Iraq," he added.

The Secretary-General stressed the Organization supports an all-inclusive process and had hoped that this electoral process and the transition arrangements would pull the Iraqis together.

"It has not worked as we had hoped, but we still urge the parties to work together and I believe the reversal by the parliament of the decision last night would help the process," he said.

On UN's role in Iraq, Annan said he thinks "we are very active in Iraq, we are as active as we can be and I think we played a very effective role in the elections, in the constitutional process."

"We are working with them on the referendum and eventually, for the elections in December," he declared. "And I think those are important contributions by the United Nations. I don't think we can do any more at this stage, because of the security environment."

Iraq's parliament has voted on Wednesday to reverse the controversial changes it has made to constitution referendum rules, and to return to the original interpretation of the voting rules for the Oct. 15 referendum. Enditem
