AMMAN, Oct. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Amman announced here Wednesday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas have agreed to meet on Oct. 11 after mediation by Jordan's King Abdullah II.

The office of the Jordanian king made the announcement in a statement after the monarch telephoned Abbas and Sharon Wednesday evening with his mediation efforts.

During the phone conversations, King Abdullah underscored the importance to work to guarantee a lull and put an end to the tension between Israel and the Palestinians, said the statement.

"Following the good offices of King Abdullah to push forward the peace process, the Palestinian president and the Israeli prime minister will meet Oct. 11 to find a solution to pending problems," the statement added.

Earlier in recent days following an escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants, Sharon had cancelled a planned summit meeting with Abbas on Oct. 2.Enditem
