Moussa warns Palestinians against infighting
www.chinaview.cn 2005-10-05 01:38:07

CAIRO, Oct. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa on Tuesday urged the Palestinians to maintain unity, warning infighting would put the Palestinian cause in jeopardy.

"Anyone seeking to disrupt Palestinian unity would be committing a big mistake, jeopardizing the very Palestinian cause," Moussa was quoted as saying by Egypt's official MENA news agency.

The AL chief called on "all Palestinians to rally ranks, especially during this critical stage of their history."

Moussa, the former Egyptian foreign minister, added that Egypt had played a "key role" in closing ranks among the different Palestinian factions and would continue to do so.

Moussa made the comment after Sunday's clashes between Hamas militants and Gaza police trying to impose an arms ban left three people dead and 50 others injured.

Palestinian policemen burst into the building of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in Gaza on Monday to demand a crackdown on armed militants.

Shortly after policemen disrupted the session in fury over the killing of a commander by Hamas gunmen, the lawmakers overwhelmingly voted for a motion of no-confidence in Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei's cabinet for failing to contain the chaotic situation following Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Striplast month.  Enditem
