MANILA, Oct. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- The Philippine military intelligence officials are assessing terrorist threats in the country in the wake of another wave of bombing attacks perpetrated by suspected members of the Jemaah Islamiyah in Bali, Indonesia, said a military spokesman on Sunday.
ĦĦĦĦThe military public information office chief Buenaventura Pascual also said there is still no need for the military establishment to raise red alert now.
At least 26 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in coordinated bombing attacks Saturday in the resort island of Bali,Indonesia.
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has condemned the attack and asked for a tightening of security measures in the Philippines.
"I believe that our intelligence units are already assessing this (Bali bombing) to give us a clear picture whether there are going to be or there are plans to launch similar attacks in our cities," he said.
The spokesman said both the military and the police forces are continuing with their efforts against terrorists, including the Southeast Asia-based Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) group and Abu Sayyaf Group in Mindanao.
He noted that military forces are exerting "continuous pressure" against Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani in Central Mindanao where they have been pursued by the government forces since last June.
The Philippines itself has also been hit by several bombing attacks this year, in which more than 10 people were killed.
The government blamed Abu Sayyaf for the attacks while linking local terrorists with international terrorist groups such as JI. Enditem |
