SEOUL, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- South Korean government on Friday reviewed a series of anti-terrorism and other security measures ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting to be held in Busan.
During the morning's meeting held in Seoul, presided over by South Korean Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan, the government reviewed various measures to guarantee the safety of participants amid the ever-growing global threat of terrorism, reported South Korean Yonhap News Agency.
The APEC meeting, set for Nov. 18-19 in the South Korean second largest city located some 450 kilometers southeast to Seoul, will be attended by 21 leaders from the region.
Organizers estimate that about 6,000 people will come from abroad for the summit and connected events, with an additional 4,000 arriving from other parts of the nation.
The government plans to obligate all participants in the forum to carry a plastic card with an RFID (radio frequency identification) tag when inside the various venues of the summit, said Yonhap.
A police security team will locate the whereabouts of vehicles carrying the leaders on a real-time basis using an automatic vehicle tracking system.
"Nurimaru" APEC House, a dome-shaped villa for the summit on an islet off the southern port city of Busan, will be jointly guarded by police patrols, navy ships and air force fighters.
The government will also order police to exchange more information on international terrorism organizations with the National Intelligence Agency and spy agencies abroad.
Some 15,000 military forces and civilian volunteers will be deployed at major subway and train stations a month before the summit opens to monitor suspicious people and materials.
Meanwhile earlier in the day, a ceremony was held to mark the opening of the "Nurimaru", which means "pinnacle of the world," in Busan.
Leaders from 21 APEC countries are to hold the second day of summit talks at the venue, where they will pose for commemorative photos in traditional Korean costumes following discussions on regional and international topics on Nov. 19.
The first day of the talks is scheduled to be held at BEXCO, a convention center in Busan, on Nov. 18. Enditem |
