LONDON, Sept. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The family of a Brazilian electrician, Jean Charles de Menezes, who was mistakenly shot dead by police in London two months ago, called for justice to be done and the arrest of police responsible for the deadly shooting.
"All we want is justice so that no mother feels the pain that Iam going through," said Menezes's mother, Maria Otone de Menezes, at a press conference in London where she was accompanied by her husband Matuzinhos Otone Da Silva and other family members.
"The shoot-to-kill policy is wrong", she said, adding "In that case, Jean was treated like a mad dog."
On July 22, the 27-year-old Brazilian electrician was shot seven times in the head after boarding a tube at Stockwell underground station by anti-terrorist police who mistook him for a suicide bomber.
Also speaking at the press conference, Menezes's brother, Giovani Da Silva, insisted that the police responsible for shooting Menezes to death should be arrested and taken to court. He said he was convinced the family have not been told everything. "We were told CCTV cameras didn't work," he said.
Just before the conference, the electrician's parents and other members of his family visited the Stockwell station where they were overcome with emotion as they stood outside the station looking at flowers and reading tributes. They then were taken down to the platform where Menezes boarded a train shortly before he died.
Earlier this morning, they also retraced Menezes's last journey from his flat in Tulse Hill, south London.
The family flew into Heathrow from Rio on Tuesday. Scotland Yard is paying for the trip, which comes a month after three senior Brazilian officials spent four days in London on a fact-finding mission.
The IPCC has promised the family will be the first to see much of the evidence it has uncovered about the shooting. However, IPCCchair Nick Hardwick has said there would be some material that could not be disclosed for reasons of national security.
A 43-year-old woman was last week arrested and later bailed over the leak of information from the inquiry. Enditem |
