Typhoon Damrey to form strongest cyclone hitting south China
www.chinaview.cn 2005-09-25 21:29:59

HAIKOU, Sept. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Typhoon Damrey to land in southernmost China's Hainan Province on Sunday night is expected to be the strongest tropical cyclone affecting south China region in 10 years.

Wind near the typhoon eye was up to a hurricane at the strongest, at a speed of 50 meters per second Sunday afternoon moving westward to the eastern shore of Hainan.

Deputy director of the Provincial Meteorological Station Cai Qinbo said there have been only four typhoons including Damrey slamming Hainan at this power since 1960.

Damrey will cause heavy losses to the province's economy since the island province is bracing for the harvest season of economic plants such as rice, banana and rubber. Sea traffic linking the island and China's mainland was suspended Sunday morning, said Cai. Enditem
