Palestinians urge US to stop Israeli aggressions

GAZA, Sept. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) urged the United States on Sunday to interfere immediately to stop the ongoing Israeli large-scale aggressions in the Palestinian territories.

PNA spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh told reporters that the PNA called upon Washington to interfere and prevent further escalation of violence.

Rudeineh warned that an Israeli decision to revive targeted killings of Palestinian militants would plunge the whole area into a turmoil.

"This will lead to the destruction of the peace process and stability in the whole region," he said.

Rudeineh said that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice contacted Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday evening and Rice stressed the importance of self-restraint to prevent deterioration of the situation in the region.

Rice urged Abbas to continue contacts with Israel and the United States, Rudeineh said.

In response to intensified Palestinian rocket attacks over the weekend, Israeli troops launched air strikes on the Gaza Strip and arrested over 200 members of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the Islamic Jihad (Holy War) in the West Bank.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon vowed on Sunday to use "all means" to stop rocket attacks, while the Israeli security cabinet decided to renew raids into the Palestinian territories and targeted killings of Palestinian militants. Enditem
