DRC to disarm rebel forces from Uganda, says defense minister

KINSHASA, Sept. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- The Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) will soon disarm Ugandan rebel forces in its territory, Defense Minister Adolphe Onusumba said Friday.

The UN Observer Mission in Congo (MONUC) will help the DRC government carry out the disarmament plan, Onusumba said.

He added that the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and its Deputy Commander Vincent Otti have been listed as a terror group and terrorist by the international community.

The DRC, which is also faced with many problems, should not become a haven for illegal organizations and their members, Onusumba said.

The minister said that with the help from MONUC, Ugandan rebelsshould surrender their weapons peacefully, or the DRC government will disarm them by force.

Last week, about 50 LRA rebels, led by Otti, left their areas of operation in northern Uganda and southern Sudan and crossed into the Garamba National Park in northeastern DRC.

LRA rebels have killed tens of thousands of civilians and displaced over 1.4 million people in their 19-year-old rebellion in northern Uganda. Enditem
