BEIJING, Sept. 23 -- The European Union has imposed
anti-dumping charges of between 14.1 percent and 56.2 percent on certain
finished polyester filament fabrics originating from China, according to the
Ministry of Commerce.
The duties were imposed starting Saturday, said an official at the Commerce Ministry¡¯s Bureau of Fair Trade for
Imports and Exports who declined to be named.
The latest action by the EU against imports of
textiles from China follows an agreement between the two sides this month to
unblock millions of Chinese textiles that had been impounded at European borders
since imports exceeded their initial quotas.
Chinese garment imports rose sharply this year
following the end of world-wide quotas, prompting a reimposition of restrictions
on the imports by China¡¯s trading partners.
The United States and China will hold another round
of talks on textile issues later this month in Washington.
In the first eight months of this year, the EU was
China¡¯s biggest trading partner, with Sino-European trade totaling US$137.9
billion, up 23.5 percent from the year-earlier period, according to China
customs data.
