KABUL, Sept. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Two Afghan police and three Taliban were killed Sunday morning during a firefight aroused by Taliban attack in eastern Afghan province of Khost, an official said.

"A group of Taliban militants attacked the military checkpoint in Yaqobi district of Khost early this morning. Two police and three Taliban were killed. Three have been injured including two Coalition troops and one solider of Afghan National Army," Gen. Mohammad Ayob, the provincial police chief told Xinhua.

"The attack did not interfere the election today, but we have strengthened the security check by surrounding the area and searching house by house in order to find the militants," he added.

With the beginning of the parliamentary election today, Taliban has intensified the attack against Afghan and foreign troops.

Taliban attacked the police department in Washir district of Afghanistan's southern Helmand province on Saturday night. One Taliban has been killed by the police, governor of the province Sher Mohammad told Xinhua Sunday.

Taliban's remnants who term the election as a plot to "legitimize the US occupation of Afghanistan" in a stern warning the other day asked Afghans to stay away from the process or face its dire consequences.

Over 100,000 Afghan Army and Police backed by 20,000-strong US-dominated coalition troops and 10,000 NATO-led multinational force have been tasked to provide security for the election day. Enditem
