BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez denounced the US-led war in Iraq on Thursday and urged world leaders to consider moving the UN headquarters out of the United States because of it.

In a speech to the UN world summit, Chavez also accused Washington of fueling terrorism and appealed for the establishment of a new international political order.

ĦĦHe said the fact that the war was fought without UN authorization showed that Washington has no respect for the world body.

"There were never weapons of mass destruction but Iraq was bombed, and over UN objections, (it was) occupied and continues being occupied," he said. "That's why we propose to this assembly that the United Nations leave this country."

Chavez said UN headquarters should be moved from New York to international city "outside the sovereignty of any state," and noted that some have suggested Jerusalem.

The three-day New York summit was convened to mark the United Nations' 60th birthday by laying out a plan for multilateral action in the new century on terrorism, human rights, development, peacebuilding and U.N. management reform. (Agencies)
