Israel: Gaza pullout leads to renewal of peace talks
www.chinaview.cn 2005-09-14 14:47:34

JERUSALEM, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said on Wednesday that the completion of the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip could lead to the renewal of peace talks with the Palestinian National Authority.

"We would like to see the Gaza model succeeds," Shalom, now in New York ahead of the World Summit at the headquarters of the United Nations, told Army Radio.

The disengagement from Gaza "could constitute an encouragementfor returning to the peace process," he said.

The Israeli army completed withdrawal from Gaza on Monday after 38 years of occupation, following the removal of all 21 settlements in Gaza last month under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's unilateral disengagement plan.

Shalom arrived in New York on Tuesday and began meeting his counterparts from other countries. One of these meetings was with the Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Noer Hassan Wirajuda.

During their hour-long meeting, Wirajuda told Shalom that it was too early for diplomatic relations between the two countries.  Enditem
