KAMPALA, Sept. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally 2005 turned
fatal during its first leg when one of the cars in which Rwandans fans were
following the event, overturned, killing three of them and injuring two others.
The accident occurred in Luweero district, some 60 km north of Kampala.
The Luweero District Traffic Police officer, Rogers Nandege told Xinhua by telephone
on Monday that the accident occurred on Saturday evening when Rwandans rally
fans in a Toyota Land Cruiserregi stration number RAA 945X, heading for
Kampala, hit a commuter minibus and rolled on the tarmack for several times.
He said that the cause of the accident was reckless driving.
He said that the Rwandan rally fans tried to overtake many vehicles and in
the incident they ended up knocking the rear of a commuter minibus taxi.
Nandege said that during the accident the driver of the Land Cruiser
identified as Mubarak died on spot while one passenger identified as Babato died
in a health center in the district.
He noted that another passenger who was in the Land Cruiser died in Mulago
Hospital in Kampala.
According to Nandege, the accident scene was filled with blood and broken beer bottles, the roof of the land cruiser was smashed. Enditem |
