MOSCOW, Sept. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- The speaker of Russia's lower house of parliament called on the international community to put "a roadblock" to international terrorism on the fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
State Duma speaker Boris Gryzlov told reporters Sunday that Russians offer their sincere sympathy with the American people on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and the world must not forget the attacks in the United States, Russia and elsewhere.
"When we speak about Sept. 11, North Ossetia and Beslan, we speak about the tragedies the world cannot forget. Memory and grief for the dead as well as understanding of the responsibility of the generations to come make us do our utmost to put a roadblock to new terrorist attacks," Gryzlov said, cited by the Itar-Tass news agency.
Russia has been hit by a string of terrorist attacks in recent years, most notably last year's Beslan school siege in the North Caucasus republic of North Ossetia.
More than 330 people, 172 of them young school children, were killed in the siege, which ended after government forces stormed the school seized by armed militants last September.
Gryzlov said parliamentary leaders from around the world discussed the fight against terrorism, particularly the adoption of a common stand on terrorism, at the Second World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in New York last week.
"I hope the common stand will help ... all the nations to take adequate decisions on countering terrorism," Gryzlov said. Enditem |
