BEIJING, Sept. 10 -- In Ukraine, President Viktor
Yushchenko says he aims to form a new government within days to ensure state
reforms don't lose momentum.
Yushchenko has asked his long-term ally, Yuri Yek-han-urov, to form a new cabinet after sacking the government of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on Thursday. This came amid
infighting, and claims of corruption, among top officials.
On Friday, Yushchenko held talks with the
parliamentary speaker, faction leaders, and regional governors. He's seeking a
speedy end to the political crisis, and hopes for enough support from the
divided parliament to get Yekhanurov approved as Prime Minister, and a
government team put together quickly.
However, his political success may hinge on the
support he'll get from his ex-prime minister. Much depends on which way
Tymoshenko will now go. She is known as a dynamic figure who helped propel
Yushchenko and his pro-Western political movement to victory in the January
election after the heady revolution in December.
She enjoys a large measure of support in parliament
but has yet to spell out her plans.
