Baghdad airport reopens after one-day closure

BAGHDAD, Sep. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Baghdad International Airport reopened Saturday after a one-day closure due to a dispute over unpaid bills between the Iraqi Transport Ministry and a private British security company.

"The domestic and international flights have resumed. We had a flight to Dubai this morning." an Iraqi airport police officer who refused to be named told Xinhua.

"We have reached agreement with the Global security firm, and the airport is open now," a Transport Ministry official said without elaboration.

On Friday, the London-based Global Strategies Group said it suspended security operations at passenger terminal in Baghdad International Airport in an effort to recover six months of fees due from Iraq's transport ministry.

"Once payment is made by the client, Global will resume its work and allow normal air operations to resume," the company said in a statement.

Five airline companies operate 15 domestic and international flights daily to and from the airport.

The British security firm has been in charge of guarding the airport and screening passengers and bags since mid-2004. Enditem
