KABUL, Sept. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- At least four people were killed and two injured in an aborted suicide attack in southern Afghanistan Wednesday, an official said.

A Japan-made corolla exploded in Girishk district of Helmand province Wednesday mooring when it was passing a policeman's house, three occupants and a passerby were killed at the site.

"The suicide bombers were to carry out the attack on the US troops but it went off early," Mohammed Wali Alizai, spokesman for the Helmand provincial governor, told Xinhua.

The car was completely destroyed, he added. No one has claimed the responsibility so far.

Taliban militants, who vowed to derail the upcoming historic parliamentary elections, slaughtered at least 16 people, includinga British engineer and a candidate, in Kandahar, Zabul and other southern provinces in the past couple days. Enditem
