SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- South Korean southern and eastern provinces suffered damage from Typhoon Nabi on Tuesday.

Most ferry services and 133 domestic flights between Seoul and provincial cities were canceled due to strong wind and heavy rain.

Typhoon Nabi, the 14th storm of the season, was expected to go ashore on the densely populated southern Japanese island of Kyushuin the afternoon, said (South) Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA).

A total of 29 international flights from South Korean cities to Japanese cities were also called off.

In Ulsan, an industrial and port city located 414 kilometers southeast of Seoul, an unidentified man in his 70s went missing after being swept away into a river amid torrential rain early in the morning, reported South Korean Yonhap News Agency.

Some 34 elementary schools and 90 kindergartens temporarily closed down in the southern coastal city of Busan, 450 kilometers southeast to Seoul.

And another 34 elementary and secondary schools in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, some 400 kilometers southeast to Seoul, were also forced to shut down, said Yonhap.

The KMA has issued a typhoon alert for coastal areas in Gangwon and South and North Gyeongsang provinces, southern waters far south of Jeju Island.

Winds were gusting up to 38 meters a second at the center of the powerful typhoon, according to the KMA.

The KMA expected South Korea will be completely out of the typhoon's influence around Thursday. Enditem
